Haast through to Harihari

Travelled, after several enjoyable days at Wanaka, through to the Haast Pass into a couple of days of rain. Ended up in a very large gravel pit about 30 kms north of Haast where I spent a couple of nights watching the weather fronts move through, interspersed with periods of low cloud, brief sunshine and sandflies. Finally understood the West Coast, rain is heavy and then stops and one goes out and does one’s thing and then back in for the next bought of heavy rain.

Spent a night at the Harihari Coastal Walkway near the end of the Wanganui River. Used to be a logging town but now consists of about 40 white baiting cribs or baches. Best stop over so far as the walks were wonderful and cool as the sun was shining at its worst (or best). Walked over the hill to the next river down the coast, Poerua.
