Kaimanawas

Came in off State Highway 5 on the way to Napier. Thought there was a DOC camp at the start of the track into the Kaimanawas, but there was only a very small parking area. So took my heart into my mouth and drove into the ranges. It is a very narrow windy road and I was worried in case I met someone coming the other way as road was very steep and soft out to the side in may places. Could not turn around until after 7 kms as the road was so narrow. Did finally turn around and parked up and then by chance met the DOC Manager for the forest, the only other person/vehicle I had seen. He reassured me that I would be able to go on to Clements Mill clearing where there was a campsite (more technically a lack of trees) and finally after about 10 kms of low gear work I arrived. Glad I did. Was worried that the road would just run out and I would not be able to turn around. Old fool found up the creek in a bus. This place is up towards the clouds, and has a high rainfall. Have climbed to 681 meters. It is wet and magic. A real dinkum rain forest. After 10 kms of dense, intense forest, it was a relief to come to an open space such as the Clements Mill campground. There is one old guy from Tokoroa staying here. He has been here for about 2 weeks, in a very quiet, wild and peaceful place. Put on my boots and went for a long walk. Nice sunny afternoon, but it changes really quickly. No Internet or cell phone coverage.
It is the sort of bush that makes you think that if you fell over in the undergrowth, after 24 hours you would be covered in moss and starting to be reintegrated with the debris on the forest floor.
