Old Orepuki buildings

Orepuki is in the eastern corner of Te Waewae Bay in Southland and faces west and consequentially cops a fair bit of those strong South-Westerlies that come roaring up from the Southern Ocean. A town on the decline but still proud, clean and graffiti free. As towns go. one of the more exposed places in Southland and was founded during an early gold rush when it once had a population of 3000 or so. Now it looks like a ghost town and has a population of about 100. When I visited, the sun was shining and it was warm. I even looked at a house that I could have got for 60K. I could have been forgiven for thinking it was the “Riviera of the South Coast” as I saw a land agent describe it.

Just a teeny weeny bit of wind.

Where you ask is Orepuki?
