First stop was Wentworth Falls Doc camp. It had hot showers, built around the 1920s I think. $2 for five minutes which starts when you are outside putting your money in the meter. Pays to be organized.
Then stayed a night at Whangamata on the riverfront, very nice outlook and free. It was Labour weekend and the place was thronged with Aucklanders who had come down to stay in their multimillion dollar beachside “bach” and bought their small fluffy dogs and gone for a walk on the beach early Monday morning. I did think of getting a small blue plastic bag with a couple of small sausages in it so that I would fit in.
Called into Waihi just to look at the open cast mine which is right in the town but hidden by a low hill. Absolutely no evidence of this hole in the ground from the town. I think it is 300 meters deep. Walked around the rim.
Close up of working face of mine.
